In the world of photography, no, possibly in many line of jobs ranging from doctors to political figures to photographers, people still consider male as the better sex in performance wise. Many movements, regulations and reformation have taken place since the last century and the position of women have certainly gained a better place. Yet, the strong notion of weak women is still strongly felt in many countries, even in developed countries.
Does the idea of a female wedding photographer strikes you as weird? In fact, some well-acknowledged female wedding photographers have admitted to feeling insulted because of how some of their clients seem to show… disdain or disbelief in seeing their main photographer as a female.
Male > Female
As a matter of fact, sex has nothing to do with the ability to excel in any type of knowledge or art skills. Particularly, in the field of wedding photography, both male and female perform as well and may even be better than each other, in a wide sense. As you might understand, we all are different and have our own perspective, which makes photographers unique from each other, regardless of sex. A female wedding photographer will take pictures just like how a male will; the only difference is her style and your preference.
Should I cross gender as a consideration?
Depends. Many female wedding photographers has admitted that even though some showed not-so-subtle disdain to them, being a woman gives them the upper hand especially when dealing with brides. You know how some brides are so shy and awkward around men they are not familiar with? It just gets worse during the wedding because they just seem to try to avoid the camera when they paid for it to follow them everywhere! Aside from that, female wedding photographer gets the right to enter the dressing room freely without the fear of being looked upon barely by men other than their own future-husband, though others are completely okay and comfortable with their male photographers.
Female is physically different from men and in general, has a different way of thinking. Because of this, they might or might not, shows different perspectives on how they will take pictures of your wedding, which is something to look forward to! The best thing you can do is getting a pair of both male and female wedding photographer in charge so you will get two different perspectives that will definitely fill in each other’s holes.
When selecting your wedding photographer, gender does take part, though it is not meant to decide whether male or female is better for the job. The qualifications of choosing your photographer do not change because of him/her. Portfolios should be your first requirement, while gender should depend if both of you are more comfortable that way and if you’d like a more unique album of your wedding. Other than that, many other couples who have used female wedding photographer mentioned that they got excellent results and would not expect less of it, nor did they think that male will particularly perform better.
